Tomb4.exe

Having not played levels for some years, visited the site and download a couple only to be told by Norton that tomb4.exe and dll files contain viruses. Comments please

Vimmers have not been a mod for about 10 years, the avatar is a hang over, and as this was a recent level and the others seemed to be relatively old then I made a new thread :D 8) :hammer:

This virus detection will only get worse because it is now the adopted standard by all antivirus programs, but there are workarounds. Basically the removals are caused by the use of protocols to assume that if the file is not used by millions, it must be bad. Also patched exes are like Trojans, viruses. Future customlevels may encounter more problems as TRNG is changed.

Using Norton Internet Security:
1. Open up the settings in Norton for scans and exclude a directory you create on your hard drive that you will both store the download files AND play the games from. Do NOT download or play the games from My Documents or any pre-installed directory of Windows or the computer manufacturer (doing so will invite true malware from other sources later on).
You should exclude this directory from all virus, SONAR and background scans. [Note: you can exclude more than one directory but it should not be a directory that will get downloads from other websites that may be unreliable]
2. Do NOT download any Tomb Raider exe files directly or they will be deleted by Norton during the download process and cannot be recovered. Only download zips or rars from reliable sources such as trle, treditor.hu, levelbase or aspidetr. Put those zips/rars in the directory of step 1. Extract and play the game from folders in that directory.
3. If Norton quarantines a tomb.exe file during a background scan, then open up Norton and go to the history page of the security section. Find the action that deleted the TR file and click options/restore in the lower right corner of the Norton screen to take it out of quarantine and exclude it from future scans.
4. This will generally work but constant updates by either Microsoft or Norton may require re-checking the directory exclusions or restoring a game exe.

I have never had Norton exclude a TR dll file. That may be a true problem file. Norton did question LoreRaider's advent level because of his patched exe and encrypted bmp file and flagged all websites with it as a download, but it was never a computer problem.
