Back to Basics 2016 - Persia - Builder Registration
Image

The Builder's registration for Back to Basics 2016 : Persia is now CLOSED (edited 17th November 2016).
For full list of registered builders see here: Builders List

The theme for Back to Basics 2016 is Persia. For a long time there existed comparisons between Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia games. Now Lara Croft will get her chance to explore the exotic palaces of the Persian Empire. Lara may also venture to explore the ruins of Uruk, Arabic, Assyrian or Sumerian ancient cultures to solve hidden mysteries. It’s up to the imagination of the builders.
The Back To Basics 2016 : Persia builder's package has been under construction by the BtB 2016 Package Team since early January 2016. It has taken the team somewhat longer than in previous episodes to construct but is now in final testing phase, and should be ready to be sent to registered builders at the completion of the registration period. It’s an amazing pack that’s been assembled, as each year the team strives to better their previous pack. The builder’s pack is crammed full of delightful new objects and textures, and we have the pleasure of providing an extensive set of new original audio compositions written and performed by four of the package team.
This is an exciting theme, one that many fans will look forward to raiding and I hope there will be many builders keen to build a level for the competition.
----------------------------------------
Planned Schedule: (please note these dates may be revised depending on the number of submitted levels for the competition)

17 Oct 2016 - 16 Nov 2016: Builder's Registration period
17 Nov 2016 - 25 Mar 2017: Level building phase (approximately 4 months and 1 week; beta testing phase is included in this period!)
26-31 March 2017: Will be left clear for packaging everything up, final fixes and re-tests and final release preparations
1 April 2017: Levels will be released anonymously on trle.net
1 April - 1 June, 2017: Player’s Competition phase
2 June, 2017: Competition winners will be announced

----------------------------------------
Registration:
To register for the building competition, you must be a registered member of the trle Community Forum.
Back to Basics Registration is by a PM sent by you to MichaelP.
The PM should have the Title: BtB2016-Persia Registration
The PM text should provide the following information:
Your nick, first and last name
A valid email address
A valid postal address
and the text:
"Please accept this PM as my registration application for the BtB 2016-Persia builder's competition. I will not release the BtB package or any component of it or information about it to anyone prior to June 2017, when it will anyway become publicly available. This is also applicable in case I choose to drop out of the competition."

Your registration application will be validated by MichaelP and your name will be added to the Builders List .

Please note that you will not be given immediate access to the Back To Basics 2016: Persia subforum and the package. The subforum will be opened up for the participating builders at the end of the registration period. You will receive an email notification from a trle Community administrator advising you when you have access to the private builder's subforum, and a relevant download link to the builder's package.

The builder's package will contain everything that you require to build your level. You will simply unzip the package and you are ready to start building.
In addition to the building components, the building package will contain a full wad list with credits and instructions for special setups, an image-based ready reference for all wad items, and a full custom audio list with credits.

For those of you who are new to Back to Basics:
The "Back to Basics" challenge is to build a single level of about one hour net gameplay with every builder using only the supplied wad and texture set.

Back to Basics is targeted at both experienced and inexperienced/new builders. The private builder's sub-forum provides a great environment for builder's to help other builders, and to receive personalized technical advice with building your level.

In Back to Basics 2016 we will be using an old version of the NGLE (which is much more stable than the original winroomedit but it does not support any of the new TRNG features) in combination with an exe that is patched with TREP so that the exe can handle large levels and detailed objects and provide a small set of pre-defined flipeffects.

Audio tracks, objects, textures and so on will be part of the BtB package that the builders download. The only tools you may use in this competition to build your level is the supplied version of the NGLE, the converter and tomb4 that are included in the Builder's package. The only exception to this is that builders running 64-bit Win7 Win-8 Win-10 may need to use DOS-Box to compile their scripts.

Please note: TRNG is not used at all. That means that the NG Center is not used and there are no special flipeffects or scripting involved.
You can customize your script using the traditional method of TRLE scripts. (script.txt and English.txt) e.g. you can customize the names of your inventory items; create customised sky colours.

Final submission of your level for the builder's competition will be by submitting your final level editor TOM file and your script.txt and English.txt files. The project files for each level will be then compiled by MichaelP for final packaging prior to release, thus ensuring that the levels are compiled only using the supplied wad, textures and audios.

Competition:
There are two components to the Back to Basics competition.
Builder's Competition - Levels which receive the highest average review ratings on trle.net for the competition period. Note that for administrative reasons, Levelbase and AspideTR reviews are NOT included in the evaluation)
Player's competition - Guess the builder competition. Players can submit their guesses as to which builder built which level.

For the competition, the builder's levels will be released anonymously by the author "BtB2016". This way reviewers can send in their reviews without favouring any level builder. The player's competition will be 2 months duration. The identity of which builder built which level will be revealed at the completion of the competition period. Until that time, no-one is allowed to give away any information about who built which level. The builders with the highest ratings win the builder's competition.
Players can submit guesses about who built which level and the players who have guessed most levels and builders correctly will win the player's competition.

Beta-testing and confidentiality:
Builders must get their level beta-tested before release. Don't leave this until the last minute. This should be done in the final month of building to ensure that you have time to fix things during the testing phase. Builders must declare in the private subforum who their testers are. Testing can be conducted in the private builder's subforum, either by other builders in the competition or by the experienced in-house beta testers that will be available. Builders can have their level tested independently, but you must declare who the testers are. Externally sourced testers must also protect the anonymity of the builders and levels and will not have access to the builder's sub-forum. Externally sourced testers may participate in the player's guessing competition, but obviously any levels that they tested will not be counted in their guessing tally, since they already know the builder identity of the level(s) that they have tested.

Time wasters:
Registration somewhat relies on the honesty and integrity of the TRLE community. If you are not seriously intending to build a level for the competition, then please don't register.

Regards and best wishes for a great build

Scott (EssGee) on behalf of the BtB 2016 Package Team.

I guess it's an ok choice. Certainly better than the actual Prince of Persia, I think. Thank you, team. :)

Will we have to do the same setup as Btb 2013 - 2015 or will we be able to just Unzip and play usually like with the older BTB's .

Now that you mention... Just unzip and play would make a lot more sense.

Honestly, not my favourite theme or type of location, but my words are "it doesn`t matter what location the place takes in but how the location captures the atmosphere". But anyway, if I think about it even more then there is Jerusalem Project which, let`s say might be very similar to this theme, belongs among my top 10 custom levels ever created... and I am sure that the Team created another fabolous package :2thumbsup:

but I still hoped for Atlantis or Africa :anxious:

Yes, finally! Thanks to the Btb Package Builder for this great Theme, I like it already. :2thumbsup:
Of course, I will again register for this Competition. And this time, I should be able to finish the Building in time, due the long time we have for the building. :beatnik:

Woohoo, I love this theme! :woohoo: I was hoping it would be chosen, considering that it seemed to be the most popular one during the theme discussion. It should make for some awesome levels. :D

But unfortunately, this leaves me with a dilemma ... for years, I've dreamt of building a level inspired by the Prince of Persia games, but couldn't, since there were few suitable objects available. This BtB is a godsend opportunity to do so. But I've tried building levels for two BtBs so far, and didn't manage to finish building either level on time (well, I didn't finish my BtB 2014 level at all  ). So should I give in to the temptation to register as a builder this time, or stick to what I'm definitely good at - playing? Decisions, decisions ... :hmm: :D

Why not have a go at building? You've built two HoF levels thus far and it might be interesting to see what you could come up with. :)

I wouldn't look into the past to figure out such things because each building process is different.
Think what you can do in the present moment. If you do this, any fail is a countdown to success.
