TR exe Trojans?

Post by Jorge22 » 25 Nov 2010 12:26

Hello. I have a serious doubt here and I'd like someone really knowleadgeable to explain if possible. According both to Norton and to Avira, TR/Patched.Gen and TR/Patched.Gen2 (that is exes we use when we play our LE games) are considered Trojans. What's up?

Hmmmm strange, using AGV and it has no problem with them.
Like to know as well why you get those warnings.

I have not checked these files but it is pretty common that anti virus programs react to patched or modified exe files. Not because they are infected but only because they show the same signs as infected files, due to the patching.

Try

http://virusscan.jotti.org/en

for a multiscan of the files.

Hi there Vimmers. No, I only have Avira. But I had Norton for just a little while with the same rewsults. More: if you tried installing old TR games it would automatically erase the exes! :-o

EDIT: Hello there QRS. I see... Thanks. Now, I believe Norton very clearly overdoes it all with the exe files from games such as TR3 or 4 when it sends them directly to quarantine without even asking. And they're not modified files even, Norton simply doesn't know them!

I hate Norton...it makes all kinds of changes both to your system and deleting files you don't want etc. Nortons tools are great but they do it like microsoft...implementing stuff you don't want and you end up having very little options to change crucial things etc.

I have Miscrosft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes and scan the archive folder where I have all TR custom levels and other TR related files stored once a week. Never had a single alert. I also used Bit Defender online scan and Trendmicro Housecall - never found anything suspicious.

Well, I do like Avira more than any free or paying antivirus, that's true. I only had Norton for 40 days because it came with my new computer that will stay with me during the next eight years or so hopefully. It's a Packard Bell, it cost me 599 € (say 600, for Chryssakes!), and it has Intel 3 (yeah, I know there's 5 and all), 4 Gb Ram (normal), 640 Gb in the HD (less than that, of course, because of the space for the system but definitely more than usual for the price), Win 7 and I can't remember anything else by heart but it's quite alright.

And now I forgot what else I was meaning to say...

Oh yeah, about malware, spyware, adware and so forth, I'm using the Microsoft whatver-it's-called. Probably not brilliant but maybe good enough. I used to have Spybot but it grew sooooooo big, with so many threats classified, that I'm hesitating just a little in installing it again...

Avast is, IMHO the best free anti-virus available. The hitch is that shortly after you install it it expires. Never fear though! You use the interface to get a new code which is good for a year. Be sure to turn off voice notification though. It'll scare the crap out of you in the wee hours.

Malwarebytes is also an excellent program.
