Avast is killing me - reliable options?

Post by Jorge22 » 16 Aug 2018 00:13

Yes, not just because it tends to mess with every TR level lately (I complained but experience tells me I'll get ignored) but mostly because it paralyses my personal choices by fully ignoring the exclusions.
It's probably the best free antivirus these days but this is too much. It's also great in its interface and because it's light and on account of what it offers. The fact that I have to even consider changing it is annoying to say the least.

But I may actually need a comparable option. I too can read the rankings and reviews.
So, what I'm asking is, in your honest opinion, which antiviruses compare and don't mess with TR levels or at least accept my own chosen exclusions?

Many thanks.

I don't know much about alternative antivirus systems, but have you tried just Windows Defender? It's worked perfectly fine even with patched exes and when I've been asked to test a couple of levels for Michael. All I have to do is update it every week or so for the best security. But I've never had to use anything else so I can't be of more help on that score. :)

I use AVG. Sometimes when I try to play a custom level with a patched executable, it will tell me "hold on, we're doing a 15-second scan to make sure there are no problems here," or words to that effect, and then it tells me "no problem" and the level starts normally.

Microsoft isn't good enough but thanks for the heads up, mate.
AVG belongs to Avast (less options and worse interface). I'm surprised it's less intrusive than Avast. Thanks.

Anything else? What about Kaspersky? I actually don't know...

Good day
One other thing.
If you are running Window Anti-Spy ware, And your Anti Virus has Anti-Spy Ware.
You will need to shut off one, I always shut down Windows Anti-Spy Ware call Defender.
If you do not, the two Anti-Spy Wares can slow down your computer.
I was warn about that years ago, It may not apply now, but why run two lots of Anti-Spy Ware.
Happy Raiding.

I don't use Defender. I do have Malwarebytes but it's the free version, so it only does on-demand scans - and it never targeted TR. On the other hand, Avast has replied (it's usually good to threaten). Only 4 out of 68 engines target TR patched exes and none is Avast (!) - can you figure that one out? Heuristic stuff, right? Hope they fix it...

I was having really bad issues with The Electric Crystal. I just got this from Avast:

"Hello,

Thank you for reporting this false positive.

Our virus specialists have now cleared its reputation in our database.

With URLs this change should be instant, but it might take up to 24 hours with files.

For future reference you might also find the following article to be useful: Avast Clean Guidelines.

Best regards,

Avast Customer Care"

Hopefully this will solve Avast issues. Hopefully.

And thus far it has. I didn't meet any more issues after that.

If your antivirus is behaving abusively, don't tell yourself they don't care because you've got the free version or just because they couldn't care less anyway. Insist until somebody listens. They do care because it is, after all, their reputation.

Avast has indeed started paying more attention. Still, it's not the same with every level and I wonder why. I got this from Avast:

"Hi Jorge,

First of all we do sincerely apologize for the delay in handling your request as this is hardly our ideal response time.

We checked this problem with our virus specialists and they confirmed that this detection is correct. This version of the file "tomb4.exe" is infected and it will remain detected by Avast.

Best Regards,
Prokop
The Avast Support Team"

It was some level from the One Room Challenge, I think. And maybe it was Titak's but I'm not certain anymore because they're not all the same and they took much longer than usual to answer. Right now I'm playing Gateway to Atlantis and not getting any issues with that one.
So, their specialists "confirmed that the detection was correct". It's not just a matter of it being patched or something because, honestly, they fixed that kind of random detection thing. All I can say is it makes you wonder... Or it should at least.

Do you understand the difference here?
