253 character signature

Post by trplayer » 15 Dec 2005 17:04

Hey there Admins,

I have a 253 character signature (took me a lot of thinking to cut it down that short), but for some reason when I click to "Submit" the information, I get an error tha the signature is too long.

What could be going wrong here?

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,

the maximum number of characters in a user signature is: 255
What could be wrong? You might have counted wrong. Remember that you also have to count the space characters and other characters as well (like this one: ...)

I'm using Word's word-count feature to count it. It includes all the characters, and spaces.

Thanks,
Jon

I just counted it all by hand, and have come up with the same number of 253.

try to shorten it one letter by one and see if it works at some point in time, or post it here so the admins can have a look

Sorry, but I tried it and it works for me. I tried 255 characters and it works, I also tried 256 and it didnt work.
Just try it this way: use just 1 characters less. The site really lets you know when you have too many characters. If you are still not able to upload your sig, then try using another character less. Just fiddle around that's the only thing I can advise you for now.

EDIT: oops, didnt know that you already replied, MichaelP.

Ahem sorry to interfere but if you are using a database under utf8 (or other unicode character sets) and somebody uses special characters (which require at least 2 bytes in utf8) in strings, you are not able to use 255 characters...

Of course, if your mysql or postgresql database is configured for 1-byte-character-sets (like latin-1) this shouldn't be a problem.

trplayer, if your sig includes paragraph marks, Word will count them as 1 char but this forum will count them as two (which they actually are).
I'm not lost. I'm locationally challenged.

By paragraph marks do you mean ¶ ? I don't have any of those in my signature. Actually, here is what I am trying to get:

Try the TR-INSTALL Batch File for custom level installation.

That's about all it is really, nothing too complex. I could try that solution of just cutting it back one letter at a time, but I would have to wait 'til tomorrow when I was in school--my home connection is far too slow to be loading that page over and over again, as it could take some time.

Thanks for all of the suggestions,
Jon

Edit: I should probably post that in a code tag so you can actually see the text :-P.

Code: Select all

And I do see three paragraphs in your sig.

The one immediately after the image, the one below and the one at the end of the text below. The marks are here, even though you can't see them.

I copy/pasted your sig and counted the exact number of chars using VBA and the result is 257.

Maybe you could shorten the .jpg name if it's possible?

[edit]If you remove the blank line between the image and the text you'll get exactly 255 chars. Maybe you could try that?

Yes, just like Sutekh suggested, the following works:

Code: Select all

Try the TR-INSTALL Batch File for custom level installation.

Should actually be quite easy... simply put [ img ] without the blanks, then the link to the picture you want to show, for example: http://www.trle-hosting.net/levels/2013 ... r_eric.jpg and then [ /img ] without the blanks and it should work

If you want to add a link to the picture that people can click on to go somwhere else, then you need to do: [ url= <add link>][ img ]<add image link>[ /img ][ /url ]
