Beginners Improved Tut1 project & level

Post by bedazzled » 05 Aug 2006 18:54

I have created a enhanced version of the Tutorial level supplied with the Level Editor. It’s intended to show new builders the standard which they can achieve at their first attempt :-o

I'm hoping to encourage them to actually read the TRLE manual and build the tutorial level, before striking out on their own. :)
Simply by following the manual while building the tut1 level, paying attention to the texturing and then adding a few extra lights & some simple lighting effects, they can build a level to be proud of. :yay:

Just as importantly they will have gained valuable experience with the level editor. :2thumbsup:

The level download includes the new project file which newbies can build.
I have also taken a series of screenshots showing the level . If your on a slow connection please be patient while they are loading.

@ Mods can this be made sticky please ?.

I posted it in another forum, and it was promptly put down. You try to help people & you might as well be :banghead:

Unbelievable

I saw that you had asked for it to be removed and was wondering why.

Can a Mod please delete this thread as I closed my website sometime ago, and I don't have any copies of the prj or screenshots anymore even if I did re-open Laras-Workshop. :)

Will do if that's what you wish, but I'm wondering if anyone happens to have the files in question and is willing to share? :) Should no one turn up during tomorrow and maybe the day after tomorrow, I'll delete the thread :)

Link fixed in the original post. Thanks again to sapper for supplying me with the file and to Michael for uploading it on a safe place where it should not get lost so soon :)

If anyone happens to have the screenshots in question, feel free to either post them in this thread, or contact me :)

I'm interested in learning how to build levels but I'm scared... :(

I've read the manual and worked through the tutorial but so far I find editing very fiddly and awkward, what with having to set up stacks of rooms when you want to make ledges and pools and whatnot. After looking at the intricacy of the "Coastal" demo level included with the editor I'm amazed the designers' brains didn't explode. The very high quality of custom levels being released is pretty intimidating as well. Are there any other good resources available for educating noobs, after the tutorial? :)

Hey there, Sad Git (hope it's just bad self-evaluation on your part :D )

Agreed that the level editor's system seems awkward and intimidating at first, but you've already done yourself a huge favor if you rebuilt the tutorial level presented along with the manual! :)

I don't want to lie in saying that it gets much easier as you go on, but it does become less foreign and obscure, that's for sure! The really hard stuff like impeccable texturing or detailed room geometry and planning (ala Coastal Ruins) is mostly a matter of practice and the amount of time you're willing to invest, but definitely attainable if you go for it! :)

As far as resources go:
There's of course http://trsearch.org/ if you're looking for outfits and objects - but I wouldn't get carried away with that, especially for your first project (my recommendation would be to use an existing wad - if you don't care much for the originals, there're always the Back To Basics wads, which are usually nicely varied).

There's also the Skribblerz site offering lots of resources and tutorials if you're looking for something in particular - and of course there's this Level editing forum, where you can probably find anything of interest too, for starters :) Of course there's more, but that should work for now, and I'm sure others can manage to direct you where other goodies are on the net!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask - that's what we're here for :)

Thanks for your advice, eTux. This does feel like a friendly forum - I think I might move in here. :D

I just needed some reassurance. I'll definitely have a try at making a level, maybe something modest to begin with.
