BTB 2020 is among us! - let's share our impressions

Post by Luisa » 15 Jun 2020 03:54

I have so far only perfunctorily played the beginning of most levels to get a general impression of the package, but let me say:

- once again I'm impressed with the quality and definition of the wad and textures. the elements look a tad less colorful than the last three packages but, maybe for that very reason, more photorealistic and authentic. i don't think either of those things are inherently superior to one another, it depends of the feel of the levels you're going for, and i'm digging the look of those levels very much;

- i'm also digging this new btb trend of making people part of the environment. it gives a feel of authenticity to the scenery and i hope it goes on for future btbs;

- music is top notch and very immersive;

- it's just me or lara is walking faster?

Excellent. Unfortunately, as soon as I finished downloading a level, Defender quarantined the exe pronto. But it's solved.

Don't know if it's faster but surely it's not the traditional animation.
Normally I'm critical on new animations but this is a good one, I admit.

The outfit reminds me the one in Titak's Himalayan Mysteries (colors apart)

I'm just about to start and I must say I'm really looking forward to it. Plus, apart from all the quality entertainment, I always find BTB a really excellent excuse for ignoring the housework. :D

The whole package seems to be inspired by Himalayan Mysteries. Which is a very good thing, IMO. :D

I have just finished the seventh level (playing them in the numbered order) and everything is amazing indeed. I have not submitted any reviews just yet but so far to me all have been straight 10s all around. :lol:

I love how there are elements from pretty much all of the Tomb Raider games, but also plenty of Uncharted 2 references. From the provided storyline, I think the yeti ambush in Nest of the Souls was a direct homage to the opening of the Shambala segment in U2AT.

Yeti ambush? I can't wait. :lol:

I have to concur with everyone. These are such high quality levels, I am so impressed. To the builders, beta testers and organizers... nicely done. :nice:

I can't wait to know who has built these 2 :roll:

I have only played Garden of Four Seasons so far, but it is stunning. The visuals remind me of the quality of BtB-Greece--they so effectively create an ambiance. I genuinely considered looking up some Tibet travel videos after playing this one.

I agree that messing with Laura's animation is typically a mistake, but this change works just fine.

I agree! Would be nice to see this other-people-included angle in lots of levels, let alone BtB levels.

I think it gives a feel of genuineness by reminding us that those cultures are still alive and are not relegated to relics of the past, not to mention it expands the variety of environments one can create, instead of sticking to the same uncharted regions of old temples and caves. I know it'll sound cheesy but some of these levels really made me feel as if I was a tourist exploring some nice tibetan village, which can be a very welcome sensation when you haven't left your house in months.

(it is something I have been noticing on later wads, not only in BtB but other levels as well, a tendency of aiming to capture the genuine feel and geography of the represented locations, instead of just reproducing stereotypical motifs associated with them. It started with Israel in The Jerusalem Project, and then there was Venice in TR Anniversary Definitive Demo and, more recently, Sevilla in Christmas In Sevilla. I really hope it continues.)
