If there are any news regarding a more specific timetable, I will announce that here :)

:D

but :nope: I googled for images with +Lara +Croft +punk.
Everyone I know in "real life", when I mention I like (classic) Tomb Raider, they will give me alienated looks. :-P
This is the one reason that sometimes makes me wish Core had given Lara a less prominent cleavage. (vocabulary)

back to topic, sorry.

Probably raided a lot of flea markets and destroyed a lot of alarmclocks! :P
It indeed looks beautiful.

However, a small newbisque question about B2B (I've been out of the scene many good years).
Since Steampunk is so storydriven, is it possible to use own voices/music? And how about those ingame images that are possible with the TRNG? Thanks for answering!

I don't think that Steampunk levels depend more on story-relative tools like cutscenes, voice-overs or in-game images to tell a story than any other level theme. So there won't be an option for the builders to create custom images to display in-game or to use custom audios.

You can pretty much tell a story in a level by just setting up a main plot in the storyline (which will be on the BtB site, like last year) and making the player understand the following events in the level by puzzles, items and scenery.

Thinking about it, how many of the 2300+ levels released to date use such fancy tools like cutscenes and the like? Most of the ones that DO need them for storytelling are 6+ level epics that have a turn or two in the storyline during the game. In a single level of roughly 40 minutes of gameplay, I really doubt that people will have to do much storytelling that cannot be solved by the actual level design or by naming keys and puzzle items to make the player know what is going on. In my opinion, the focus of the Back to Basics challenges is still to create an innovative and unique level without any fancy extras. But I really don't want to start the "what is BtB about?"-discussion again so I will shut up now :D :innocent:

Ah, but concering audios: if anyone by chance knows internet sites that offer public domain music and/or sound effects, please drop me a line :)

Good choice,

PS: Good choice for using ngle/trep :2thumbsup:
But I also believe that this should no longer be called the BTB.

This debate raises every time a new BtB gets announced. In a way, the builders are still back to basics in the fact they can't customize anything so they have to make do with just what they're given. They're given a basic set of textures and objects to work from and that's it.

I'm very curious to see what the Steampunk levels will play like, though I have not even played through the Venice BtB yet...

I would love to build for the Btb. I suppose I would have to download the TREP then if I wanted to though.
I love the Steampunk theme as well. :D

If you have read through the thread you might have spotted this:
Absolutely! The Back to Basics contest is quite ideal for starting to build. Maybe not making your very first rooms or test levels, but the fact that you get a complete wad and texture set and don't have to worry about new stuff like wad editing or texture set creation, it makes it very easy to build your debut level as you can concentrate on gameplay, architecture and the like.... The basic level building elements so to speak ;)

Concerning the TRNG/NGLE issue - TRNG will probably (99%) not be used. The old NGLE (used in BtB Venice) however will be provided (mainly due to HQ textures and the crashing issue). Apart from that I really have to make up my mind yet...
So NO TREP :D
I have no clue why Apofyse got the idea that TREP would be used, probably he didn't read the whole thing as well :-P
Oops, I did it again... Image
