Tomb Raider The Dagger of Xian Remake

Post by Anna27 » 27 Jul 2016 19:11

As you know, the chances for official remake of Tomb Raider actually are very weak. Fans, however, don't give up - one of the lovers of Lara nicknamed Nicobass decided to prepare yourself a remake entitled The Dagger Of Xian. Nicobass creates The Dagger Of Xian by Unreal Engine 4. Unfortunately, the Premiere of the game will not be so fast, but on this page you can already see some effects work.

The author did exellent work and let's hope, he won't cancel it.

And great news. You can play the demo from the TR2 Remake:
Download1
Download2
Download3
Download4
There are few files in case, that one of them won't work.
Demo only works on personal computers. The minimum requirements are: Windows 7 x64, graphics card with DirectX 11 support, 4 GB (though 8 GB recommended) and 6 GB hard disk space. If necessary, install Framework 3.5. To do this, after unpacking in the Engine \ Extras \ Redist \ en-us folder, you will find an instance named UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe.
Have a nice play!

Gef87 from TRO-Online offered to host Nicobass' demo in case the download from Nicobass' website didn't work. :)

Full download (TRO server)
Server Free (mirror 2): Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Server Free (mirror 3): Part 1 Part 2, Part 3
Server Free (mirror 4): Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

Yesterday, it took me 2-3 hours to download the game, and was able to play it on my amazing ASUS gaming laptop just fine (which would work for a lot of TR games...except Rise of the Tomb Raider, which is why I got an Xbox One in 2015). So far it's a beautiful game in terms of graphics, the flares last more than a few seconds, some of the controls are pretty intuitive, the puzzles and jumping challenges are in the Crystal Dynamics vein, but alternating between the keyboard and the mouse to move and shoot is really tricky already with the tigers.

I'll finish playing Hall of Records, but for this demo, so far, I'm at a jumping passage.

Hits, by mentioning the kind of controls you just convinced me not to play it. Thanks. :)

It's too bad the game controls dissuaded you from playing, Jorge. But it is true it does take getting used to. As graphically beautiful as the demo is, the combat controls are the weakest point in the game (other controls are fine, but...), even against crows. Hopefully the author can change the combat controls in the final version.

Outside of combat situations, moving the mouse does help adjust the point of view to align properly for a jump though.

I did successfully come up with a strategy to deal with swarms of spiders, which can actually latch on to Lara. Even if Lara has the option of stomping on them after she gets them off her body, it is better to find a place to back away from the situation, and shoot them from a distance. I finally was able to move and shoot, not just stand there and shoot...

Wow. I watched a couple of youtubers play the demo of this and it seemed amazing, not just the graphics but the gameplay and sense of exploration as well. I am surprised it is not talked about more on the net, though I guess there is a remake of everything everywhere nowadays.

Maybe you need the framework, try running the setup in the following directory and see if it solves the problem:
Engine\Extras\Redist\en-us and execute UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe

As I see it moving the mouse isn't really fit for third person games like T............ wait! Max Payne is just that way and it's fine. But I still doubt it's the same with TR. Plus, Max moves like a crab.

Lol, you're so very wrong! I'm not a hippie if that's what you mean. ;)

Nah, I can't hate a game I haven't played. I just don't feel like playing it. :)

Oh, and I actually love Max Payne even though he does move like a crab! :D

I finally finished the demo...it did require some thinking to get through the puzzles involved. The ending to the demo was a really nice touch though in terms of gaming capabilities (the idea of a ceiling crumbling as Lara is shimmying across a piece of wood...). :) .

For the combat sequences, I am considering using an Xbox controller once the final version of the remake comes out.
