Another pet peeve of mine is unnecessary flyby's, who usually come in plenty within a level. Flyby's are okay for very large rooms (obviously), or the beginning of your level when you want to set the mood, but some builders think it's a good idea to include long flyby's for relatively unimpressive rooms and more than once in a game. It just kills the fluidity of the gameplay.

a flyby its ok but many people have problems with newer levels
so give them a chance to save a game before a huge flyby
cos maybe they can't save at first load
and then have to watch the same flyby again and again and again

I also can't understand why some builders remove the flares and binoculars from the game as, technically they are Lara's only source of light. You then have to grope around in the dark.

I always shoot my way through the darkness whenever that happens

Same as vimmers.
No levelstart with a big flyby before there is a chance to save.
Flares and binoculares are important.
And please no only half working new moves, animations and other new stuff.

Another one I'm currently facing - a shatter switch with misplaced collision so you hit it after 20 times of trial and error...

Another pet peeve is the dreaded flare bug. Maybe this isn't the builder's fault, but I hate it when flares don't function when you want them to. In order to get any light you have to fling them on the ground or, as Luisa says, use unlimited pistol fire to illuminate your path through the level. And if you run out of flares, you're screwed. :|

I am not a fan of obscure or trial and error puzzles. The player is left in the dark over what to do.

You can boil it all down to "inconsistency". As much as everything else.
A fine example is a series of levels I've just played.
The plot is: "artifact beneath Rome".
Levels included: Rome, Tinnos, Library, Angkor, Tibet and Karnak, featuring scraps of Scotland and China. All on a single descent through a single plot location.
