The Last TR5 Level Released Was In 2015

Post by Storm Chaser » 14 Aug 2019 02:32

Do we not like TR5 levels?

I posted a while ago about the shortage of TR5 levels and I’ve noticed that it’s now some 4 years since anyone released a TR5 Level.

There are thousands of TR4 levels and lots of TR1, TR2 & TR3 levels out there. Why the shortage of TR5 levels?

Any ideas or opinions?

Would you like to make a TR5 level together? I recently download DXTRE3D. I haven't dug into it yet but I will pretty soon. TRC Russia is stuck in my head for some reason lol. I want to do a different setting for the future.

I hear the engine has limitations and is frustrating. But I really don't know just yet.

Isn't DXTRE3D the engine people use for TR5?

Yes it is.

I’ve built a few TR5 test levels in DXTRE3D (but never released anything) and I find that things don’t always work correctly after you build a new object set in Fexmerger. Problems I’ve encountered include Lara falling into the floor when using a key, enemies that don’t work correctly, waterfalls that cause texture strobing, rotated textures displaying a different texture to the one chosen, Lara butt left at the Lara start position, etc. Worst problem though IMHO is adding music, as using add soundtrack numbers in triggers bares no resemblance to the order of the tracks in the audio folder, so let’s say you choose track ten, it won’t be the tenth track listed that plays, which is very confusing. Sometime I will hopefully get round to making a spreadsheet to list the correct tracks with their corresponding number.

If you just use a standard object set, they appear (as far as I can tell) to work correctly but then, of course, you can’t customise the level.

As I had nothing to do today and the weather was fairly awful, I decided to have another look at TR5, so using the demo and VCI levels I built an 8 room base test level.

Problems:
Lara does not operate switches properly and switch has a delay before anything happens.
Swipe cards don’t go where you put them. They end up several squares away.
Grappling gun does not show in menu after you pick it up.
Some textures show different texture to the one chosen.

So I think I’ve answered my own question about TR5 levels.

What do I need to start building levels on TR%, I am still new and I worked out a sequence long enough to start getting into the building mode. Please advise me of any software and or things I may need. Thanks

If you are going to build TR1, TR2, TR3 or TR5 then you will need DXTRE3D which is the “unofficial editor”. You will also need to download an existing level as a starting point. Then you will need at least:

A Texture editor
A Script editor
An Object editor

Which ones you need depends on which levels you want to build. You can use Fexmerger and any texture editor to edit the objects / textures for all levels but the script editors etc depend on which levels you are building.

There are loads of tools allowing you to edit virtually anything. https://www.aspidetr.com has a huge amount of tools and resources.

If you want to build TR4 levels it’s a bit different and it’s years since I built a TR4 Level so not sure what’s needed now, as there are the original editor, the next gen editor and various more modern editors. Lots more info here https://www.tombraiderforums.com

Edit:

You will also need the original CD’s to have access to the objects. I build TR3 levels but you can use the statics from any level in any level, but only the movables from the type of level you are building. EG my current level is TR3 movables, but has statics from TR2, TR3, TR4 and TR5.
