No, the reach-in switch did something else. Here's what I've written in my walkthrough:

The large jars around the periphery of this area are empty, but they're fun to shoot. Note the closed S gate and the nearby rising tile that leads to a crowbar door, and another closed gate in the W wall. Turn around at the closed W gate and note five translucent tiles on this side of the lava lake. If you step on the four peripheral tiles (not the one in the middle), the W gate opens. The flare bug kicks in here, so if you want to see what's inside you need to light a flare and toss it. A swinging blade guards the entrance, together with a mummy and a snake. Shoot the latter and dash inside to pull down the wall switch. Exit and go to the SW corner of the lava lake. Step on the four tiles here to open the SW door. Time the flames and dash in to activate the reach-in switch, then quickly back flip away.

Go to the SE corner of the lava lake. Step on the two translucent tiles here to raise a nearby block. Use it to get up to the crowbar door in the SE corner. Open it, kill two eager scorpions and pull down the wall switch. Turn around and shoot another scorpion that drops down on you on your way out. Hop down and go to the NE corner of this large room. As you approach the steps there, spikes spring forth on either side of a wall switch and a rising tile.

I have no idea what the reach-in switch and the crowbar room switch do. I do know (courtesy of god mode) that pulling down the switch beyond the spikes opens the gate next to the raised block/crowbar door, but I haven't found a way to lower those spikes.

Is the builder monitoring this site? I sent him an email on a different matter but haven't heard back.

The first time all three dogs were there waiting for me. On later reloads some did appear in the water, but I was still able to shoot them.

The reach-in switch can be used only once.

By the way, I'm at a loss to account for some of the comments in this thread. It's a bit challenging in places, but I'm finding it to be a pretty decent level (maybe because I'm playing the revised version).

Problem solved. When I did as you suggested and stepped first on the four tiles in the small pool, the reach-in switch door opened and the nearby spikes lowered.

In the walkthrough I'll caution players that it's necessary to do things in a particular order. Thanks.

anyone recall how to open the wooden door in the red ring in picture
I've spent a lot of time with this game, but I'm about to bin it. How is one supposed to navigate this room with spikes everywhere - or even enter it? (See screen shot in post around the middle of the previous page.)

I saw no boulder or lever. Is it in the area with the checkered ledges? I may need for someone to draw me a picture.

Thanks, I'll try that (finding and shooting the bell).

Edit: Pulled the underwater lever, wonder what that did. Anyway, making progress again.

As requested, here is a savegame immediately after pulling the switch that raises a third block on the upper walkway. I'm still trying to find a way to get up there safely. Lara's back is to the switch that has been pulled, very near to another switch that is spike-trapped and of course has not been pulled. (And yes, in writing the walkthrough I used the flycheat to get an overview of this room without having to worry about spikes, so comments about the savegame are unnecessary.)

Thanks. I've reached the ledge where I can see three ropes hanging from the ceiling. Hopefully I'm almost done.

Edit: Whew. Finished, finally. And legally, too. I feel like I've run a marathon, but I found this to be an exhilarating, well-planned raid. Walkthrough to follow.

Here's a savegame near the end for anyone who may find it useful.
